Sustainability
The Built Environment
Sustainable architecture includes both climate change mitigation and adaptation. It considers low carbon and low energy design, over the life cycle of a building.
The built environment is identified as one of the main culprits of climate change in the UK. Buildings contribute to global warming over their whole lives – from construction, to use, maintenance and re-purposing and demolishing. Existing buildings are a critical part of the solution – 80% of the UK’s buildings in 2050 have already been built.
Sustainable architecture includes caring for, maintaining, re-using and recycling our existing buildings.
A Sustainable Brief
Whether new build or refurbishment, we work with our clients to establish a sustainable brief for each project.
Our broad range of experience includes:
- Passive house design
- Biodiversity and net gain
- New and renewable energy systems (heat pumps, solar water, biofuel, photovoltaic)
- Energy and environmental assessment, including domestic and non-domestic rating
- Water recycling and re-use
- Air tightness, ventilation, insulation, glazing, heat loss and solar gain parameters
- Thermal mass and thermal bridging
