Hulme End Station

The Manifold Valley Visitor Centre was formerly the terminus of a light railway which connected the town of Leek to the villages of Hulme End and Hartington in the Peak District.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council appointed Tarpey Woodfine Architects to refurbish the dilapidated steam engine shed into a new tea room facility and exhibition space. Tarpey Woodfine designed a new structure around the existing steel trusses to support the weight of the new building and glazed roof lantern.

We worked closely with the Peak District National Park Authority to achieve a building that responds to its current use and context while making reference to its historic railway origins. The project was awarded an English Heritage Award.
