Westwood College
Set in the grounds of an old manor house built in the 17th century, once lived in by the Davenport family, Westwood College is a state school for 13-19-year-olds. The site has numerous different architectural builds, including a science block built in the 1980s and the ‘New Hall’ in the 1960s.
Tarpey Woodfine Architects designed a new building providing four new classrooms alongside studios for drama and dance. The building is situated on a former tennis court on the College campus and sits within an attractive wooded setting surrounded by a variety of high-quality buildings, some of which are listed.
The design incorporates two distinctive single-storey blocks to express the different uses, separated by a glazed entrance core. The classrooms are finished in render and glass with a mono-pitched roof which leans against a spine wall. The studio spaces on the opposite side of the atrium are clad in cedar boarding with flat roofs.
